“When flying on shorthaul flights, fewer and fewer offer blankets so take your own pashmina or wear layers. Also, wear looser shoes so when your feet swell you can get them back on at the end of the flight.”

  • My mother has booked a cruise around the Caribbean and wants to pack nothing but swimsuits and sarongs. I keep telling her she needs to have a couple of posh things for the evenings, am I right?
    Question posted 13/11/09
    • I think you are both right, some cruises do have a casual dress codes and others do still have formal nights. I think it would be best to contact the cruise line and ask them. It would still be a good idea to pack some beautiful silk sarongs which can double up as silk maxi skirt. Tied in the right way, with a heels and sparkly jewellery should do the trick or one or two long shift dresses can be dressed up with one of those beautiful sarongs around the shoulders.

  • My son wants me to book him an adventure holiday in the UK. What sort of clothing will he need for roughing it out doors for two weeks with military type instructors?
    Question posted 13/11/09
    • He will need jeans, combat type trousers, waterproof jacket and trousers, a track suit, thick socks, extra warm clothing such as a hat and gloves, jumpers, t-shirts. I'm sure the adventure holiday company will send you a list of anything I may have missed if you ask them to.
  • I love my shoes, and always pack for too many when I go on holiday. I know I need flip flops, but what others pairs can I take to be covered but not fill up my suitcase?
    Question posted 21/09/09
    • Think about last year's holiday and try to remember the shoes you thought you would wear and just never did. You know how often you wore heels or flats.
Ballerina pumps are very comfortable and will go with most outfits. Gladiator sandals are very in this year and one pair of cut out boots or shoes possibly in metallic bronze which will match most outfits.
  • I’m going away to Paris for a couple of days this Autumn and am determined to take hand luggage only. Any top tips for fitting everything in my bag?
    Question posted 21/09/09
    • Well you must be very strict with yourself !! Decide on a colour scheme and stick to it. This A/W 09 one great fashion colour is a mix between grey and beige. With this colour you can coordinate black, grey and brown. Choose your most comfortable boots and wear them to travel in as well as for all your sightseeing and strolling around the cafes. This season’s big baggy long jumper/tunic can be worn with leggings, a silk scarf and boots in the day, in the evening whip off the leggings and scarf replace with a statement necklace, opaque tights and killer heels and voila you will be the belle of Paris ooh la la!!
  • How can I stop my clothes crinkling in my suitcase? I don’t like ironing at the best of times, especially not on holiday.
    Question posted 21/09/09
    • When packing your case I suggest rolling your clothes rather than folding this will help minimise creasing, alternatively you can pack with tissue lining the folds. When you arrive at your hotel I suggest hanging your clothes in the bathroom and letting the steam from the shower gently ease out the creases.
  • My husband and I are going on our first cruise to celebrate to our wedding anniversary. I’ve heard you have to dress up for dinner on cruise, is this the case?
    Question posted 25/08/09
    • Congratulations on your wedding anniversary, and what a perfect way to celebrate! In terms of dressing for dinner, you will need to check with your cruise line.
Traditionally there are always at least a couple of evenings where you need evening wear for dinner but many cruises are now more casual. Also there is usually a wide range of restaurants on board most ships which come with their own individual dress codes (i.e. no t-shirts, or no swimwear) so check your cruise line’s brochure or website.
It’s always fun to dress up though so even if it is not mandatory, pack a glam outfit and make the most of the occasion!
  • I always find flip flops really uncomfortable on holiday, can you recommend an alternative that is still lightweight and easy to walk in?
    Question posted 04/06/09
    • Lots of people find that flip flops rub in between the toes or don’t offer enough support for your foot. A good alternative would be a pair of Birkenstocks. These come in every colour imaginable and hundreds of styles. As they’re made of soft leather and strap on to the foot, you should avoid both these issues easily. You can also get slightly cheaper versions in some high street shoe stores, such as Office. Less practical but more fun are adult jelly shoes which most fashion footwear shops sell these inexpensively in the summer in a cocktail of colours. Don’t forget your ballet pumps either, these are lightweight and small enough to squeeze into your handbag so you can swap them with your heels if needs be.
