In a speech given in Hyderabad, India, British Airways CEO Willie Walsh announced details of the company's aim to cut carbon emissions by 50% by the year 2050.

His announcement came just days after the news of Heathrow's expansion was given the green light by the Government, prompting critics and environmentalists to voice their concerns about the effects the plans have on emission levels.

During the speech - held to celebrate the recent launch of BA flights to the destination from Heathrow - Walsh told the audience: "We will make progress through investment in a cleaner aircraft, use of alternative fuels, more efficient flight routings and the spread of emissions trading from Europe to the whole world.

"We have taken climate change issues very seriously for a long time. More than a decade ago, we became the first airline to publish fuel efficiency targets - and we have achieved an improvement since then of almost 30%."
