Government minister John Hutton has fueled speculation that Heathrow is set to be given the green light in its pursuit of a third runway.
Speaking at the Farnborough airshow, the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform intimated that the government is due to make a decision on the future development of Heathrow before the end of the year.
With climate change an issue on everyone's lips, the proposal for a third runway has been met with criticism from environmental lobbyists. Hutton, however, was keen to stress that everything was being done to address such issues.
"We will help make flying greener rather than restricting people's opportunities to fly altogether," said Hutton. "Ensuring air travel continues to flourish sustainably into the future will mean tackling a new environmental and economic challenge arguably as great as learning to fly for the first time."
Should Heathrow receive clearance to operate a third runway, passenger numbers passing through the terminal is likely to increase significantly. As a consequence, the need for travellers to book airport parking and hotels will also increase.
