A bronze statue of folklore legend Robin Hood has been unveiled at the airport which bears his name.

Actors Sean Bean and Brian Blessed revealed the 10-foot statue at Doncaster and Sheffield's Robin Hood airport to celebrate its success since it began operations in 2005.

The first commercial flight left the airport on April 28, 2005, destined for Palma in Mallorca. Previously the airport had served as a military base.

Since then more than 1.68 million passengers have passed through the doors, flying to the 45 destinations now available.

The statue was sculpted by Neale Andrew and stands on the first floor of the airport for all visitors to see.

Managing director David Ryall said: "Sean Bean and Brian Blessed were chosen as they are proud of their Yorkshire roots and remain committed to the ongoing development of the region."
