The first ever flight to or from the UK using mobile telephone technology took place on the 7th August, 2008. The Emirates service from Dubai to London Heathrow used the Aeromobile system and reported that 30 calls took place during the flight.
UK airspace is strict about the use of mobile telephones during flights and had been exclusively banned before the Emirates flight tested the new service. However, Emirates state that it will only be available on 10% of flights in their schedule, and only when the planes are above 23,000 feet.
Emirates airline continues to promote a respectful use of the phones with passengers asked to keep their mobiles on silent at all times. Crew will also have the option of making the service a text-only facility at any point at their discretion.
The Aeromobile system, which uses a telephone signal that doesn't affect aeroplane's instruments, is likely to be introduced by other airlines including Turkish Airlines, Air France and Australian-based Qantas.
