Luton airport has installed recycling points for passenger use and regular glass and cardboard collections for its retail and food outlets.
Following a successful Recycle Week in June, the airport plans to expand this project across other areas of their business during 2008. The airport recycled 16 tonnes of waste during April of this year.
London Luton challenged three local primary schools to create sculptures from waste paper, cardboard and plastic during Recycle Week.
The pupils of Wigmore Primary, Wigmore Someries and Pirton Hill junior schools designed models of a plane, the terminal building and the control tower.
Adam Divney, Community Relations Executive at Luton, said:
"The Airport is focusing on green issues in our community and by issuing this challenge to the local schools we are highlighting a serious message in a fun and absorbing way. The sculptures were amazing and showed great imagination."
London Luton handled nearly ten million passengers last year and employs almost 500 staff.
