Stansted Airport has been granted permission to expand its capacity to an amazing 35 million passengers a year. The government has allowed BAA Stansted airport to grow its traffic movements to 264,000 per year.
The independent public inquiry last year, supported by the Planning Inspector and the government, has enabled the single-runway airport to increase its passenger intake by 10 million a year.
Stewart Wingate, Stansted managing director, said "We are naturally delighted that the Secretaries of State have granted permission for the next phase of growth at Stansted. This secures our future up to 35 million passengers a year."
"We will now be studying the full detail of the decision, including the independent Planning Inspector's report before commenting further. What we can say today though is that this is clearly great news for passengers and for businesses, located in the local community or across the wider region."
Chief Executive of BAA, Colin Matthews, said: "This is an important decision for Stansted, but also for the wider UK economy. Our long-term growth expectations are high and it is right that we have a policy framework which encourages responsible growth and which sets out clear steps towards additional runway capacity at Stansted and Heathrow."
