"My favourite place is Atlanta followed by Mali. I love the music and the clubs, the clothes shopping in Atlanta is amazing and I love the vibe on the street."
Capital of the US state of Georgia, the city of Atlanta is a perfect example of old and new combined. Located on the Piedmont Plateau with the Chattahoochee River forming its northern border, the region around Atlanta has been inhabited throughout history by Native American tribes, including the Cherokee Indians and the Creek.
With the presence of the railroad, Atlanta played a pivotal role in the American Civil War, eventually being destroyed during Sherman's infamous 'March to the Sea'. The subsequent reconstruction of Atlanta laid the foundations for much of the current city, with the modern facade a contrast to the rich traditions that remain throughout.
The King Center: Established by Coretta Scott King as a living memorial to the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., The King Center hosts thousands of visitors every year, each looking to pay respect to Atlanta's greatest and most-revered son. A visit to The King Center will enable you to view a number of exhibits dedicated to his life and teachings.
Georgia Aquarium: The world's largest aquarium opened in 2005 and has since acquired the reputation as one of the greatest marine-life collections open to public viewing. Over 500 different species, and in excess of 100,000 inhabitants, can be found at the aquarium, with such notable inclusions as whale sharks, beluga whales and black-footed penguins.
Atlanta Cyclorama: Depicting the Battle of Atlanta during the Civil War, the Atlanta Cyclorama can be found in Grant Park. Created by the American Panorama Company in the 1880s, the work was commissioned by Vice Presidential candidate and former Union Army General, John A. Logan. Its current residence is in the Cyclorama Building.
