"Halong Bay, off the Vietnamese coast, is one of the most breathtakingly tranquil and beautiful places I've ever visited. Take a day trip from Hanoi or stay overnight on Cat Ba Island to soak up the natural beauty of the bay's deep green sea and dramatic limestone islands."

Halong Bay - Hanoi

Hanoi is Vietnam's capital city. It's located on the right bank of the Red River and 2010 is the city's 1000th year since it was founded. It's a city with a long history and rich cultural heritage and so a popular destination for travellers. As one of the best places in the world to eat, we thoroughly recommend a visit if you're holidaying to Vietnam.

The city is home to over 600 temples and pagodas, but the architecture also has a heavy French influence after their occupation in 1873. One of the most stunning locations are Hanoi's lakes. Tourists are encourage to hire boats and there's even a floating restaurant.

Hanoi at night

To get to Hanoi by air, and indeed all of northern Vietnam, visitors must use the Noi Bai International airport. The city can be reached by road from the airport, with taxis being the most common way to reach Hanoi. The roads of Hanoi are dominated by motorbikes and scooters, so take care crossing the road once you're there as it can prove a bit chaotic at times.
