Puerto de La Cruz

The main resort in the north of the island is Puerto de la Cruz, which was one of the first resorts to become popular. It's now much quieter as most tourists have moved down to southern resorts. Puerto de la Cruz is greener than the south and has more changeable weather due to the proximity to the mountains, but of course what you do get is fantastic mountain views.

The town was originally a port and the cruise ships do still stop there, meaning it can get busy when a ship is in harbour. It's a town with an old feel in many places, which is a contrast to the more modern resorts in the south. This is probably the most Spanish of all of the resorts, in terms of food and entertainment, and it's also perhaps one of the most cosmopolitan as here you'll find German, French and many others along with the English tourists. Many people also come here to spend a winter in the Spanish sun. Hotels and apartments tend to be more upmarket here with at least four star being the norm.

Best for: culture vultures, those who want a quieter resort, winter swallows.

Playa de Las Americas

Playa de Las Americas is where you go for fun, fun, fun, and is very much geared towards a young crowd. With innumerable cocktail bars, nightclubs and restaurants to choose from, there is no shortage of nightlife here - much of which is based around an area called Veronicas Strip. If you're staying here, don't expect to get to sleep until the early hours of the morning. By day, shoppers are also warmly welcomed, with designer shopping complexes offering labels, electronics and other goods. Beaches are busy and offer a wide range of watersports in season.

Accommodation is mainly hotel or apartment based, usually in purpose-built high-rise blocks. But if you come to Las Americas, chances are you won't be planning on spending a lot of time in your room.

Best for: partygoers, beach bunnies.

Los Cristianos

With its pedestrianised streets, Los Cristianos is a real family-friendly resort, although you can walk to Las Americas if you're after something livelier. Like Las Americas, this resort has more than enough bars and restaurants to keep you occupied. It has two beaches, including Playa de las Vistas, which was created with sand from the Sahara. You can also take a boat trip to see dolphins from here or visit one of the other islands.

Best for: families, couples.

Fanabe

If you're looking for something slightly more exclusive, then Fanabe might just be for you. This is a comparatively new resort, with lots of award-winning areas of beach, designer shops and world-renowned hotels. This is also the location of the island's only cinema showing English-speaking films. Las Americas is still within walking distance, but Fanabe has a more laid back, genteel flavour to it. Catering for a more upmarket crowd, this is where you'll find private villas with their own pools. Bliss!

Best for: couples, shoppers, those looking for a more relaxed holiday.

Los Gigantes

If miles of straight coastline isn't your cup of tea, then take a look at Los Gigantes, home to the massive cliffs known as Acantilados de los Gigantes. While it does have its fair share of bars, restaurants and a beach that's particularly good for surfing, you won't feel hemmed in or crowded here. Water lovers will appreciate the wealth of opportunities for snorkelling, boat trips and scuba dives that all start from its bustling harbour.

Set in the west of the island, and away from the popular southern resorts, Los Gigantes is one of the few resorts that is a little out of way, and so isn't a brilliant base if you want to be out and about exploring the rest of the island.

Best for: Watersports enthusiasts, families with older children, couples.
