Tobago Departures

Yes, it’s an island of white-sanded beaches, turquoise seas and fierce sunshine, but there’s so much more to Tobago than that. The island is hugely rich in culture – it’s a place of folklore, music and dance inspired by its African heritage.

One half of a small but mighty republic, with so much to offer

The little brother of bustling Trinidad is full of rainforests and nature reserves as well as great diving sites. The main town on the smaller island is Scarborough - the coast is dotted with fishing villages, and the interior is mountainous.

Top 5 things to see and do on Tobago

  1. Buccoo Reef - Admire the underwater world during a ride in a glass-bottomed boat before taking a dip in the Nylon Pool, a coral pool in the sea
  2. Bird watching - Tobago is home to more than 200 species of bird and there are several great vantage points
  3. Golf - Tobago has two championship 18-hole golf courses, both with great views: The Mount Irvine Golf Course, lined with coconut trees, and the equally beautiful Tobago Plantations Golf Course
  4. Main Ridge Forest Reserve - This protected rainforest runs the length of the island and is home to a bewildering array of flora and fauna. There are 24 species of snakes, 16 types of lizard and 210 species of birds
  5. Kayaking - The waters around Buccoo Bay and Bon Accord Lagoon have gentle swells so are a good spot

Top 5 Tobago beaches

  1. Bacolet Bay - This secluded crescent-shaped bay, which is only 150m long, was the location for part of the Swiss Family Robinson film
  2. Store Bay - Possibly Tobago’s most popular public beach, despite its small size – it’s only 200m long – and good for swimming. There are a variety of shops, restaurants and vendors here, including some well-known crab-and-dumpling vendors
  3. Bon Accord Lagoon - Fringed by mangrove wetlands and an important habitat for many species of bird, this beach is only accessible by boat
  4. Grange Beach - Ideal for swimming and popular with surfers
  5. Stonehaven Bay - One of three beaches in Tobago where the endangered giant Leatherback turtles come ashore between March and June to lay their eggs
