Aberdeen airport is the UK's 14th busiest airport. It flies three million passengers per year to more than 40 destinations, almost all of them in Europe and the UK. It's also one of the world's most utilised heliports, transporting more than 450,000 helicopter passengers a year to and from the North Sea oil rigs. Therefore, despite only having one runway for holiday flights, overall, Aberdeen airport has more runways than Heathrow.

What to do in and around Aberdeen

The stately, sparkling Granite City will charm you straight away with its cultural heritage and stunning surrounding scenery. Explore and look upon rugged coastline, peaceful lochs, ancient woodlands and towering mountains. The Cairngorms National Park is the country's largest national park and encompasses 3,800 square kilometres of countryside. Visitors can enjoy walking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, skiing, golfing, canoeing or fishing, and you can even take part in watersports on the lochs.

The city's three main attractions offer free entry. The Aberdeen Maritime Museum tells the history of the North Sea and its industries and Aberdeen Art Gallery contains paintings, sculptures and graphics from the 15th century to the present day. Provost Skene's House is Aberdeen's oldest private town house. Dating from 1545, its rooms help you to envisage just how people lived in the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries.

And if it's retail therapy you're after, the city centre has more than 800 shops, selling everything from designer fashions to traditional Scottish craftwork.
