British Airport Authority (BAA) have announced a 7.3 % increase in retail spending at UK airports. London Heathrow Airport, Gatwick airport, London Stansted airport, Glasgow airport, Edinburgh airport, Aberdeen airport and Southampton airport are all run by BAA. The figures spell out a new high for shopping at BAA's airports since duty free sales in the EU were abolished.
Heathrow airport has recently undergone a thorough re-vamp with more shops, cafes and bars at Terminal 1. The retail figures are particularly encouraging in the light of the weak dollar. The rise is also in spite of new members entering the European Union - reducing the airline destinations that can sell duty-free goods.
Record numbers of passengers and faster check-in times have all contributed to the increase in spending at the airport shops. Passengers have had more time to shop before boarding flights and therefore have benefited from the opportunity to spend.
