New York is now a "convenient and affordable" holiday destination for people travelling from the south-west of England, a spokesman for Bristol airport has said.

Tony Hallwood, the hub's aviation development director, said that the commencement of a Continental Airlines service has presented holidaymakers in the south-west region with an option of an easily accessible direct flight across the Atlantic.

From New York travellers using the Continental link can gain access to 143 destinations throughout the Americas.

"Continental's daily service has made New York a convenient and affordable destination for business and leisure travellers across the south-west," he said.

It is not only outward bound travellers who have benefited from the new flights, according to Mr Hallwood, as American holidaymakers have taken advantage of improved access to south-west England.

"An increasing number of US visitors are also enjoying easier access to this region's attractions, such as Bath, historic Bristol, the Cotswolds and Stonehenge," the airport official explained.

Other recent developments at Bristol include a decision by Ryanair to open a base there, which Mr Hallwood described as "fantastic news".
