Aer Lingus flight

Irish airline Aer Lingus is reducing fuel surcharges on long haul flights and introducing nine new flights for summer 2009.

Fuel surcharges on flights between Ireland and the USA are being cut by up to 20% on new bookings with immediate effect. The fuel surcharge on flights to New York and Boston will fall from £58 to £50, and on flights to Orlando from £75 to £60.

Passengers flying to Chicago will pay £55 (down from £68), while the fuel surcharge on flights to Washington falls from £58 to £55, and on flights to San Francisco from £85 to £80.

“We have consistently reassured customers that the fuel surcharge would be kept under active review as part of Aer Lingus' continued commitment to its low fares strategy. We are pleased to honour that commitment now that oil prices have fallen," explains Aer Lingus chief executive, Dermot Mannion.

Aer Lingus is introducing nine new flights next summer. The new routes, which are now on sale, are Belfast airport to Milan, Munich and Lanzarote; Dublin to Newcastle, Sofia and Catania (Sicily); and Cork to Lanzarote, Lisbon and Rennes.

As part of its expansion, Aer Lingus is also increasing flight frequencies on 17 of its most popular European routes, including Paris, Faro, Edinburgh, Barcelona, and Malaga. It says it also plans to operate more flights year round and to recommence its summer service to the Black Sea resort of Bourgas.

"Today's announcement marks the continued development of Aer Lingus' short-haul network, with a focus on capitalising on our most popular European services,” comments Mannion.

“Moreover, it reaffirms Aer Lingus' commitment to providing direct, low fares access for Irish customers to new destinations as well as providing real growth opportunities in inbound tourism from emerging markets," Mannion adds.

The Irish airline is currently running a promotional offer for free seats to the UK and Europe where passengers only pay taxes and charges. The offer runs out at midnight tomorrow, Thursday October 30th.
