Air France strike means airport chaos
[November 14th 2008]
A four day strike by Air France pilots is causing chaos at airports in France with knock on effects across Europe.
Air France plans to operate just 60% of its long haul flights and only 50% of short and medium haul flights today thanks to the pilots strike over changes to the retirement age.
But the airline warns there is the risk of further last minute flight cancellations during the strike period. Air France says it is cancelling flights in advance according to the number of pilots on strike. But it acknowledges that because flight crew are only scheduled to arrive one a half hours before flights depart it may be necessary to cancel some flights with very little notice if pilots fail to turn up.
There should be less disruption to the flights of Air France's partner airlines, which include Brit Air and CityJet. But Air France says that 20% of these flights could still be cancelled.
For the latest flight information passengers in France can call toll free on 0800 240 260. Outside France passengers can contact their local call centre or call a special number in France: +33 1 57 02 10 55. The Air France website is also being updated with detailed flight cancellation information.
In a statement Air France said: Air France is expecting very significant disruptions to its activities and apologises to all passengers for this situation, which it strongly deplores.
Chairman Jean-Cyril Spinetta has described the strike as unnecessary as the change in the retirement age from 60 to 65 has already been passed by the French parliament and is therefore out of Air France's control. Spinetta estimates the strike will cost Air France at least 100 million euros.
The strike is set to continue until the end of Monday.
