Battlefield breaks

Low fares airline Jet2.com will offer travellers the opportunity to fly direct from Leeds Bradford airport to the heart of the Somme for battlefield breaks next Spring.

Flights from Leeds Bradford airport will go direct to Albert in the Picardie region of northern France, near the site of the historic Battle of the Somme. The twice-weekly service will depart on Mondays and Fridays between April and June next year, with fares starting from £60.99 one way inclusive of taxes.

“This is a really exciting destination for us and we are proud to offer the first direct scheduled flights to Albert from the UK,” says Jet2.com managing director, Ian Doubtfire.

“Battlefield breaks are becoming tremendously popular within the tourism industry and we anticipate the vast majority of passengers flying to Albert will be travelling there to see the sights and experience the history of key events during World War 1,” Doubtfire adds.

With the 90th anniversary of the end of World War 1 this month and other notable anniversaries, interest in visits to the battlefields and war graves of northern France has risen significantly in recent years.

“We will be offering two flights a week allowing four-night midweek breaks, which we believe will be extremely popular with schools, and three-night weekend breaks geared more towards independent travellers,” explains Doubtfire.

It is also thought the new flights will appeal to travellers interested in city breaks in nearby Amiens and Lille.

“The strategic positioning of our airport will enable independent travellers to easily access Amiens and Lille which are great cities to visit. The Somme and the Picardie region have a lot to offer and are rich with cultural heritage,” suggests Jeff Laroze-Cervetti, manager network development at Kéolis Airports, which owns Albert-Picardie airport.

The flights from Leeds Bradford airport to Albert-Picardie airport go on sale today. Flights will depart from Leeds Bradford airport on Mondays at 14.10, with the return flight at 17.00. On Fridays flights depart Leeds Bradford at 08.20 and return at 11.10.
