American pulls out of Stansted airport
[28th May 2008]
American Airlines is axing flights to New York JFK from Stansted airport after 2nd July as part of its plans to reduce capacity in a difficult market.
In a press statement the airline says: This decision is among a number of first-round reductions to Americans flight schedule as part of the airlines previously announced plans to reduce capacity in an effort to significantly reduce costs and create a more sustainable supply-and-demand balance in the marketplace. These actions come in the face of skyrocketing fuel prices and a softening economy.
The airline says it will continue to make additional schedule reductions in other markets and will assess the location and route-specific impacts of those changes. This will be done to achieve plans to reduce AMRs fourth quarter mainline domestic capacity by 11% to 12% compared to 2007 levels and its fourth quarter regional affiliate capacity by 10% to 11% compared to 2007.
Were obviously disappointed by todays announcement from American Airlines that it plans to cease its Stansted operations in July, comments Stansted airport strategy and solutions director, Nick Barton.
We continue to work closely with airlines keen to commence services from Stansted and with those already here looking to further develop their existing European networks. Let there be no mistake, we remain confident in the prospects for the development of long haul operations at Stansted, Barton adds.
American Airlines says it will continue to offer its full schedule of flights to New York JFK from Heathrow airport. The airline also offers flights from Heathrow to Miami, Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles and Raleigh/Durham airports.
