BA launches remote check in service

Remote check in

British Airways claims an industry first with its new remote check in service for travellers on the go.

The new mobile check in service allows passengers to check in for flights via their mobile handsets no matter where in the world they are. Any mobile device with wireless connectivity can be used to log on to the BA remote check in website. This includes mobile phones and devices such as the BlackBerry.

Once they've logged onto the site, BA customers can access the British Airways timetable in real time, select seats and check in individuals, groups and families for outward or return flights. The service is free and available in 11 languages, and there is no need to download any accompanying software.

"We are proud to be the first UK airline to offer a remote check-in service in 11 languages. We recognise that our customers have busy lifestyles, and by offering greater accessibility we hope to enhance their overall travel experience," explains British Airways innovation and planning manager, Chris Carmichael.

In July this year BA launched a service enabling iPhone users to check in via their handsets. The airline says the service is proving to be very popular, with more than 16,000 downloads in the first month after launch.

BA became the first airline to introduce the application for the Apple iPhone 3G, allowing users to access real-time flight arrival and departure information, view the BA timetable and book flights.

"We're always seeking to improve the service our customers enjoy by the smart use of innovative technology and the iPhone is a fantastic way to achieve this," said British Airways CIO, Paul Coby, at the launch of the service.
