BAA confident on Stansted application

Airports operator BAA has expressed confidence that approval will be given to its application to increase passenger limits at Stansted.

BAA has expressed confidence that its planning application to increase annual passenger limits at Stansted to 35 million will be approved.

The five-month public inquiry into plans to increase passenger traffic at the airport came to an end on Friday.

During the course of the application, BAA's legal team argued that expansion at Stansted would create around 3,800 jobs and generate tens of millions of pounds in revenue for the local economy.

There was also "special attention" paid to ecological issues, with BAA's leading counsel outlining the measures the organisation plans to put in place to minimise impact on the local environment.

Nick Barton, business development and planning director at Stansted, said: "This inquiry has examined in close detail the evidence we have presented to support the case for expansion.

"We now await the outcome of the inspector's report and the decision of the government, but we remain very confident of the strong and compelling case we have made."

Current restrictions place a limit of 25 million on the number of passengers allowed to travel through Stansted every year and cap air transport movements at 241,000 a year.
