News has emerged that BAA has finally relinquished its battle to keep hold of Stansted Airport.

The news marks a significant change in direction for the airport operator, who had previously vowed to fight through the courts any potential sell-off forced by competition watchdogs.

Having recently won the right to expand Heathrow Airport with the addition of a third runway, it is thought that BAA are acting to appease the Competition Commission. However, news of the turnaround comes at a time when Ferrovial - the Spanish owners of BAA - are struggling with mounting levels of debt.

The Competition Commission is set to make its final decision on the sale early in March, and it is expected to order BAA to give up Gatwick, Stansted and one of the two large Scottish airport it currently operates.
