Aberdeen airport and Southampton airport are among the winners in the Airports Council International’s 2007 airports service quality awards.

Aberdeen airport won the award for most improved airport in the survey of 200,000 air travellers in 2007. Kevin Brown, MD of Aberdeen airport, told the BBC: “We have listened to our passengers, our business and airline partners and we have invested millions to bring the airport up to the high standards our customers rightly expect and deserve”.

Aberdeen airport is BAA Scotland’s fastest growing airport, with more than three million passengers a year and flights to around 35 destinations.

In more good news for beleaguered airport operator BAA, Southampton airport won the award as the best in Europe for customer service. It was said to have the most courteous and helpful airport, airline and security staff in Europe. Southampton was also voted the fifth best airport overall in Europe in the ACI awards.

The best airport in Europe was named as Oporto in Portugal. Best airport in the world was Incheon airport in Seoul, South Korea. Second was Kuala Lumpur airport in Malaysia, followed by Singapore’s Changi airport, Hong Kong airport and Central Japan airport.

Johannesburg airport was voted best in Africa; Guayaquil airport in Ecuador best in LatinAmerica, Israel best in the Middle East and Dallas Fort Worth airport best in North America.

“Service quality should never be viewed as a ‘nice to have’ feature in managing airport services, but as a key discipline in the airport management process. We see a high correlation between management commitment to service and passenger satisfaction,” comments Craig Bradbrook from the Airports Council International.
