Work has begun on an extension of Birmingham airport's Terminal One that marks the largest single investment at the hub in over 20 years.
The new 'International Pier' will replace the facility built in 1984 and will cost £45 million.
A three storey construction, the new Pier will stand at 240 metres long and 24 metres wide with air-bridged aircraft parking for seven wide-bodied aircraft and enough space to serve 13 smaller planes at any time. Departing passengers will go through the top level, arrivals on the middle floor with the ground floor serving airline and handling agents. The new building will also see the creation of new gate lounges for passengers.
Overall responsibility for the project is with Will Heynes, the Operations Director at Birmingham airport who stated: "This investment will provide the Airport with facilities to enable it to meet the growing demand for international services to global destinations from Birmingham. Once complete, the Pier will provide a high quality gateway into the Midlands for foreign visitors."
Birmingham airport's bright and modern architecture amongst the terminals will be maintained by the new structure designed to also meet all the latest building regulations making use of innovative construction practices and to be in compliance with environmental standards.
The project's start was commemorated with a ground breaking ceremony as the airport sets its sights on dealing with the air travel of the future.
