Birmingham airport has busy December
Birmingham International Airport handled a record number of passengers in December as people headed off for Christmas and New Year breaks.
The total number of people using Birmingham airport in December was 587,760, a 2.3% increase on December 2006. Passengers on scheduled services to the EU were up 3.8%, and on non EU routes by 8.7%. Scheduled flights with the biggest increases were to Bratislava, Barcelona, Murcia, Faro and Geneva.
On charter routes the biggest increases were on flights to Malta, Bulgaria, Madeira, Egypt and Barbados. Scheduled flights accounted for 83.2% of passengers, and charter flights the remainder.
Overall passenger numbers for 2007 at Birmingham airport were up only marginally on 2006, by just 0.9%. “Birmingham International Airport has experienced an incredible year, with lots of highs and some lows but we’re really pleased to have ended 2007 with record number of passengers in December and an increase overall during the 12 months,” says BIA acting MD, Joe Kelly.
“We’ve welcomed new airlines and introduced new destinations for our region’s leisure and business travellers, and have opened our new extended Terminal 1 departures lounge, significantly increasing facilities for the comfort and experience of our passengers,” adds Kelly.
In December easyJet launched its first flights from Birmingham, announcing new routes to Geneva and Grenoble giving access to popular ski resorts for skiers and snowboarders.
Ryanair also announced new flights from Birmingham to Barcelona (Girona), Marseille and Pisa as part of its biggest ever route expansion.
Also in December, bmibaby launched new flights from Birmingham to Madrid. The service operates four times a week in the winter, and will increase to six flights a week in the summer.
In May bmibaby will launch new flights from Birmingham to Warsaw. The service will operate three times a week, complementing the four times a week service the airline operates from East Midlands airport to Warsaw.
