Birmingham airport smashes passenger record
Birmingham airport has seen the number of airline passengers in February increase by 9.2% compared to last year.
The total number of passengers in February was 635,052, smashing the previous highest figure recorded for the month of February.
It was a record-breaking February for the airport, which is great news. We are delighted to have seen bmibaby launch its new route to Krakow in Poland recently, which once again increases the choice available to passengers flying from their local airport, comments Birmingham International Airport acting MD, Joe Kelly.
The greatest growth was achieved on flights to the Irish Republic, up by 23.1%. Passenger numbers on flights to the EU grew by 15.4%, while numbers on non-EU routes rose by 10.3%. Domestic flights only increased by 3.9%, while the number of passengers on flights to Asia was up by just 1.5%.
There were 527,799 passengers on scheduled flights during February. Scheduled flights showing the most growth were flights to Bratislava, up 568%, the popular golf holidays and holiday home destination of Murcia in Spain, up 229%, Faro in the Algarve, up 127%, and the skiing holiday and city break destination of Geneva, up 124%.
New flights to Krakow in Poland were launched from Birmingham airport by bmibaby in February. A host of other new flights are scheduled to begin later this year. These include flights to Hamburg with Lufthansa on 31 March, Girona (Barcelona) with low fares airline Ryanair on 1 April, and Montego Bay in Jamaica with Thomsonfly on 5 May.
The increase in the number of Polish workers in the UK who want to fly home to visit friends and family sees a number of new flights to Poland from Birmingham airport being launched later this year. Ryanair will begin flights to Rzeszow on 18 June, Gdansk on 1 July and Bydgoszcz on 4 July.
