The second biggest airline at Heathrow airport, bmi, will double its number of flights to the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh from January 15th next year.

Flights from Heathrow to Riyadh will increase from three to six a week, daily except Fridays. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays flights will go on from Riyadh to Dammam. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays they will go on to Jeddah, replacing the current non-stop flights.

The extra flights have been made possible due to a recent agreement between the UK and Saudi Arabian governments.

“We are determined to take full advantage of the headroom that the revised air services agreement has created so as to meet the growing demand we are experiencing,” explains bmi chief executive officer, Nigel Turner.

“The doubling of frequencies to Riyadh will enable us to offer an extremely attractive schedule that will appeal to point to point traffic as well as creating a much wider range of connecting opportunities at Heathrow, particularly to and from the USA,” Turner continues.

The flights to Saudi Arabia will be operated by Airbus A330 aircraft in a two class configuration with lie flat beds for business class passengers. bmi launched its first flights to Saudi in 2005, and expanded the business class cabin in April 2006 due to strong demand. Lie flat beds were introduced in September last year.

bmi has also announced a codesharing agreement with Brussels Airlines starting on October 26th. bmi already operates flights to Brussels three times a day from Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, and East Midlands airports and seven times a day from Heathrow airport.

Under the new codesharing agreement passengers will be able to book bmi coded flights through the bmi website and agents from Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol airports to Brussels.

Brussels Airlines will operate these flights five times a day from Birmingham airport, four times a day from Manchester airport, twice daily from Bristol airport and daily from Newcastle airport.
