Bristol airport unveils expansion plans
[October 23rd 2008]
Bristol airport has released details of its ambitious expansion plans that would see passengers numbers increase to 10 million a year.
In 2007 Bristol airport handled just under 6 million passengers. To cope with the additional numbers the existing terminal would be extended to both the east and west, almost doubling in size.
The number of aircraft stands would also be increased from 24 to 33. New apron extensions connected to the enlarged terminal building by walkways would mean passengers could access planes directly rather than having to take an airport bus.
We are committed to developing and enhancing the airports role as a regional gateway for international travel. Demand for air travel to and from the South West is forecast to grow, and by increasing the choice of services we offer and enhancing the facilities we provide to passengers we can reduce reliance on airports outside the region, Bristol International Airport director of environment and planning, Alan Davies, told local community representatives.
Other plans include a new airport car park and a new airport hotel. The new five-storey airport car park would offer short-term and long-term parking for up to 3,600 cars. Extra airport parking space would also be sought on land near the airport site. The 3 star airport hotel would cater for the extra demand anticipated as Bristol airport expands.
On the top floor of the new airport car park a new passenger drop-off zone and bus stops would also be built. This area would link directly to the extended terminal building via a glass walled corridor.
Bristol airport says that work is continuing on the detailed proposals and supporting studies that it will require as part of its planning application. Once this work is complete the airport says it will consult further with a wide range of interested parties and make detailed plans available to the general public for information and comment.
A planning application for the expansion of Bristol airport is not likely to be submitted to North Somerset Council until next Spring at the earliest. The airport says all feedback will be carefully considered and adjustments made to the plans if appropriate before the planning application is submitted.
