Cardiff airport has announced plans to develop and enhance its terminal as well as a new name as it seeks to establish itself as the national airport for Wales.
Work will start in October this year with the redevelopment of the front of the airport terminal and approach areas. The arrivals and departures halls will then be linked into one large area and given a facelift through a more contemporary design. New food outlets and airport shops will also be introduced.
The airport says that this stage of the redevelopment will be completed by summer 2010, in plenty of time for Wales hosting of the Ryder Cup golf tournament in October 2010.
A brand review also sees a new name and new visual identity and logo. Cardiff Airport and Maes Awyr Caerdydd replace Cardiff International Airport as the new name for the airport. National identity is a key part of the new brand with a focus on celebrating being Welsh and all brand communication will be bi-lingual.
"The airport will benefit from this investment which will present a more discerning image domestically and internationally and provide a backdrop to continue to deliver high standards of service for passengers. It is also important to clearly align the airport's brand with its Welsh location," comments Cardiff airport managing director, Patrick Duffy.
"These plans demonstrate the airport's commitment to being part of a wider strategy for Wales. We want to see our facilities being used by more airlines offering more choice to both Welsh patrons and visitors to Wales, Duffy adds.
The Cardiff airport boss says that airlines will play a key role in the airports future. The ultimate drivers of growth for Cardiff Airport will be airlines responding to increased economic performance in South Wales and increased visibility of Wales internationally. These are issues which can only be addressed as part of wider economic policy and industrial development in Wales," he says.
"This is just the start of our new approach and we hope to announce more positive news in the coming months," Duffy concludes.
