Goa in India

Passenger numbers at East Midlands airport have grown by 15.2% in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.

Almost 1.2 million people used the regional airport in the first three months of the year. An early Easter contributed to the growth, with 95,000 people travelling over the Easter weekend, up 7% compared to Easter 2007.

Four new routes have also been introduced so far this year, increasing the choice of destinations available to local people. “The significant increases demonstrate that passengers are embracing the destinations and routes available from East Midlands airport,” comments EMA MD, Penny Coates.

In March First Choice Holidays launched direct flights from East Midlands airport to the popular winter sun destination of Goa in India. In the first month of service 99% of the seats were snapped up. First Choice has already announced it will continue to offer the flights next winter, starting from 4th November.

Other new flights launched so far this year from East Midlands are to Palma, Majorca with easyJet, Warsaw with bmibaby, and the Isle of Man with Manx2. East Midlands airport now offers a choice of more than 100 business and holiday destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, North America and Africa.

In 2007 East Midlands airport won five travel awards, including Airport of the Year, Best UK Airport, and World’s Leading Eco Friendly Airport. The airport is owned by Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which also owns Manchester airport, Bournemouth airport and Humberside airport. MAG is the largest British owned airport operator, and is privately managed on behalf of the 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester.
