East Midlands airport set a new record in May with more than half a million passengers using the airport for the first time in its history.

Total passenger numbers in May were 534,690 - an increase of 10.7% on May 2007. Domestic scheduled flights recorded an increase of 16.6%, while international scheduled traffic was up by 10.3%. Tour and charter passenger growth was up by 9%.

The two bank holidays in May helped boost passenger numbers. More than 65,000 passengers travelled from East Midlands over the May Bank Holiday weekend, an impressive 14% increase over the previous year. Growth was less dramatic for the Spring Bank Holiday, up 4% to 77,000 passengers. Most popular destinations during the two bank holiday weekends were Palma, Alicante, Malaga, Dublin and Faro.

“This is a remarkable achievement given the current industry trends. It’s evidence that passengers choosing to fly from East Midlands appreciate the convenience, comfort and ease that we offer to get their journey off to a great start,” comments East Midland airport MD, Penny Coates.

After winning five travel awards in 2007, East Midlands airport's Skylink bus network has been shortlisted for two awards at the National Transport Awards, including the Travel Information and Marketing Award for its strategic approach which has boosted passenger numbers by 44% in the last year.
