East Midlands wins Airport of the Year
[September 19th 2008]
East Midlands Airport has been named Airport of the Year at the prestigious Travel Trade Gazette Awards.
The airport near Nottingham beat Luton airport and Birmingham airport to win the annual award from the travel industry publication. The TTG Awards are voted for by the travel trade and aim to recognise the best in the industry.
Not content with one award, East Midlands Airport has also won the Star Regional Airport award ahead of Liverpool John Lennon airport, Birmingham airport and Bristol airport at the Travel Bulletin Star Awards held at a ceremony in London this week.
We are delighted to have won two prestigious and highly acclaimed awards in less than a week and see this as a reflection of our hard work and dedication," comments East Midlands Airport managing director, Penny Coates.
"These awards show the confidence, trust and respect our colleagues in the travel industry have for the Airport and we are delighted that this has been recognised in a very competitive marketplace," Coates continues.
These latest successes for East Midlands Airport follow the five travel awards it won in 2007. These were Best Regional Airport at the Travel Weekly Globe Awards, World's Leading Eco Friendly Airport at the World Travel Awards, Airport of the Year at the British Travel Awards, Best UK Regional Airport at the Travel Bulletin 2007 Star Awards and Best Airport at the Baltic Air Charter Association (BACA) Awards.
East Midlands Airport is owned by Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the largest UK owned airport operator. MAG also owns Manchester, Bournemouth and Humberside airports and has been in the news recently as it has expressed an interest in buying Gatwick airport.
The growing reputation of East Midlands Airport will no doubt help MAGs cause when it comes to bidding for Gatwick airport, but it remains to be seen who will be the highest bidder for the airport valued at least £2 billion.
With around five million passengers a year, East Midlands Airport is considerably smaller than Gatwick. The airport does now offer long haul flights to Kenya, Jamaica, Mexico, Orlando and the Dominican Republic, just some of more than 100 leisure and business destinations available.
