Following the collapse of Scandinavian airline Sterling, budget airline easyJet is launching new flights from Gatwick to Copenhagen and Helsinki.

Sterling Airlines operated flights to Copenhagen from both Gatwick and East Midlands airports. easyJet already operates three flights a week from Stansted to Copenhagen. The new daily flight from Gatwick to Copenhagen, which easyJet says is Scandinavia's most important airport, will launch on Thursday January 15th. easyJet says it will look at increasing capacity to the Danish city from Gatwick in the summer.

“easyJet is already the largest airline at Gatwick and this new route gives customers even more choice and unbeatable fares to one of Europe’s most fascinating capitals," says easyJet regional general manager for the UK, David Osborne.

"The Nordic countries offer considerable growth opportunities for easyJet. In addition to the new London Gatwick to Copenhagen route, easyJet will also offer a new connection from London Gatwick to Helsinki, which starts operating on November 3rd 2008,” Osborne adds.

After Sterling went bust, easyJet stepped in to offer stranded Sterling passengers flights home for £35. The offer is open to Sterling passengers until 23.59 on Wednesday November 5th. easyJet operates three of the routes flown by Sterling - from London, Berlin and Milan to Copenhagen.

In the Netherlands easyJet, which is the second largest airline in the country, is fighting for what it describes as "fair competition" at Schiphol airport. easyJet operations director, Cor Vrieswijk says: "Our government has given Schiphol and Air France/KLM the licence to kill airline competition and to impose a costly monopoly on Dutch passengers".

He says that Schiphol has priced itself out of the market and is not only Europe's most expensive airport but also the fastest shrinking.

"easyJet’s business model is to fly to major airports and offer customers choice and low fares on European routes. We are determined to stay in Schiphol, and we will not fly from remote airfields.” Vrieswijk states.
