easyJet to fly from Manchester
easyJet will begin flights from Manchester airport in March and plans to offer flights to around 40 destinations by 2010.
easyJet's plans to launch flights from Manchester are subject to approval by the regulators and come as a result of easyJet's interest in GB Airways which operates a British Airways franchise from Manchester airport.
"We have been talking to easyJet for two years, and they have been very keen to start services for a while," Manchester Airports Group commercial director, Rowena Burns, told the Manchester Evening News. "Manchester airport is the jewel in the crown of the North West's economy and this announcement reinforces our position as the premier airport outside London."
GB Airways is continuing to operate six routes from Manchester, including flights to Crete, Cyprus, Malta and Tenerife, until 29 March. But, according to the Manchester Evening News, if easyJet gets regulatory approval GB Airway's two planes based at Manchester will be rebranded in easyJet's colours.
The newspaper also reports that easyJet hopes to add three more aircraft at Manchester by 2010 and to fly around 1.4 million people from the airport by 2010. Passengers who have booked to travel with GB Airways next summer will have the option of flying with easyJet or getting a refund, it says.
"easyJet remains committed to our base at Liverpool and, by launching additional operations from Manchester, we can make it even easier for everyone in the North West to access easyJet's services from their local airport, giving customers the opportunity to explore Europe for less," easyJet people director, Mike Campbell, told the MEN.
