Edinburgh 'needs 1,500 new rooms'
Rising passenger numbers at Edinburgh airport will make an extra 1,500 new hotel rooms necessary over the next five years, planners have warned.
Edinburgh council planners have warned that more than 1,500 new hotel rooms will be needed near the city's airport by 2013 to cope with rising passenger numbers.
At present, Edinburgh airport handles some 8.9 million passengers a year, but this is expected to climb to around 13 million by 2013.
An extra 1,550 rooms in airport hotels will be needed to cope with this rising demand, while another 2,100 will be required before 2030, the Scotsman reports.
Graham Birse, deputy chief executive of the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, said that new accommodation capacity in the west of the city is important as a way of recognising the growing potential of the area.
City councillor Jim Lowrie commented: "Edinburgh Airport is identified as a gateway to Edinburgh and Scotland.
"This report gives further evidence of Edinburgh's growing success and the need to manage that growth in a planned and structured way."
