Etihad Airways has gained prized new landing slots at Heathrow airport enabling it to add a third daily flight to Abu Dhabi.

Competition for landing slots at Heathrow, the world’s busiest airport, is fierce and Etihad is one of the long haul airlines taking over slots at the international hub.

Etihad’s third daily flight from Heathrow to Abu Dhabi will start in October and bring the total number of flights each week to Heathrow up to 21. The airline also operates a daily flight from Manchester airport to Abu Dhabi.

Etihad reports that demand for flights between the UK and United Arab Emirates has grown considerably in the last year. More than 306,000 passengers have used the Heathrow service and 146,000 have travelled between Manchester and the UAE.

Demand is coming from both business travellers and holiday makers, says the airline. Many long haul travellers use Abu Dhabi as a stopover before travelling on to other destinations such as Sydney, Singapore and Bangkok. Abu Dhabi is also becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination, as it seeks to compete with Dubai.

“By adding these new flights to our growing route network we are able to offer a simpler, more convenient travel experience for the flying public,” says Etihad Airways executive vice president sales and services, Geert Boven.

Etihad began flights to Heathrow in March 2004, only five months after it launched. The airline was set up as the National Airline of the UAE in July 2003 by a royal decree. Etihad Holidays was launched in November 2003 offering holiday packages to a range of destinations including Australia, Jordan and New York.
