Flight cancellations at Heathrow after crash landing

Following the crash landing of the British Airways flight from Beijing yesterday, there have been flight cancellations at Heathrow this morning, mainly affecting short haul flights.

By 9am today 53 flights at Heathrow had already been cancelled. "BAA is doing everything possible to minimise disruption to our passengers and additional staff are on hand at the terminals to assist passengers," the Heathrow operator said in a statement.

"At this stage we are working hard to restore near normal operations. However, it is extremely important that passengers due to fly from Heathrow today contact their airline regarding the status of their flight," BAA advise.

British Airways has announced that it will be operating a revised flying programme at Heathrow on Friday. "The airline is planning to operate all of its long haul flights and a high percentage of its short haul flights departing from London Heathrow," BA said in a statement.

"Some short haul flights will be cancelled as a result of aircraft, pilots and crew being out of position as a result of the cancellations on Thursday," added BA. Some short haul flights into Heathrow this morning will also be cancelled, advised the airline.

British Airways said that passengers affected by cancellations may re-book on the next available flight, or up to two weeks after the cancelled flight provided a seat is available.

After the crash landing yesterday more than 200 flights at Heathrow were cancelled. A number of flights were also diverted to other airports, including Gatwick, Stansted, Luton airport, and as far afield as Manchester airport.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is expected to make an initial report about the cause of the crash within 48 hours. The British Airways pilot at the controls, Peter Burkill, has been praised for his skill in landing the stricken plane by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and BA chief executive, Willie Walsh.
