The strike in Germany affecting flights operated by Lufthansa has prompted UK airline Flybe to bring in larger planes for flights to Germany.
Lufthansa has been hit by strike action by members of its ground and cabin crew who are members of the trade union ver.di leading to 70 domestic and European flights to be cancelled yesterday. Today the strike has spread to affect long haul services, including flights to New York, Calgary and Calcutta.
The strike in Germany is expected to hit Lufthansa flights for a least a fortnight. Union members have asked for a pay rise of a little under 10% but management have so far only offered a 6.7% rise plus a one off payment. The strike could cost Lufthansa about 5 million a day.
In response, Flybe has decided to increase capacity on its flights between the UK and Germany by offering larger aircraft. The airline which describes itself as Europes biggest regional airline and is based at Exeter airport operates flights to several German cities.
Flybe is stepping in with extra capacity to make sure travellers dont get caught up in the Lufthansa strike. With our great value fares and user-friendly timetable between the UK and Germany, no-one need miss out on that important trip, whether its business or leisure. Flybe ticket prices to Germany start at £34.99 one way including taxes, comments a Flybe spokesperson.
The airline operates flights from Birmingham, Manchester and Southampton airports to the German cities of Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Hannover. There are also flights from Birmingham airport to Hamburg and Stuttgart.
As well as flights from its regional base at Exeter airport, low fares airline Flybe also offers flights from Gatwick, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports. Destinations include summer holiday favourites such as Alicante, Malaga, Faro and Nice, as well as the popular city break options of Amsterdam, Brussels and Milan.
