London City Airport

London City Airport has won the European Regions Airline Association Airport Achievement Award after passenger numbers rose by 23% in 2007.

The judges at the ERA Awards also commended London City Airport for the efficiency of its internal planning and service delivery processes that meant it was able to operate at 97% of its permitted capacity. The airport’s well structured performance partnership with its airline customers and its service oriented approach to passengers were also singled out for praise.

Accepting the award at the ERA annual gala dinner in Manchester, London City Airport chief executive Richard Gooding said: "It is an honour to accept this award that recognises the airport's overall achievement over the past 12 months. It is also 21 years since operations began in 1987. We are committed to continuing to deliver a premium service to passengers as London's favourite airport and supporting London's status as financial capital of the world."

London City Airport is particularly proud of its achievement in increasing passenger numbers by 23% last year. “When compared with growth at all other UK airports, which stands at just two per cent, the judges recognised this as a massive achievement,” the airport says in a press statement.

This is the second time London City Airport has won the ERA Airport of the Year award, having previously been awarded the title in 2003. London City Airport is also the only airport in Europe to win the ERA Palme d’Or for Sustained Excellence, which it was awarded in 2004.

Earlier this year London City Airport completed construction of four new aircraft parking stands and expansion of the departure lounge for £30 million. Ten airlines now operate direct flights to 33 European destinations from the airport. British Airways is set to launch business class only flights to New York from London City Airport in autumn 2009.

Last week London City Airport was granted permission by the London Borough of Newham to increase aircraft movements from 80,000 to 120,000 a year. The application was supported by several international organisations and by London Mayor, Boris Johnson, who acknowledged the major contribution the airport makes to London's economy. London City Airport is the largest private sector employer in Newham, and the increase in flights will create 1,000 new jobs at the airport.
