Major construction work is beginning this month at London Luton airport which should improve journeys to the airport but could cause traffic delays in the short term.

The £2 million investment at Luton airport is intended to make “major enhancements” to the Central Terminal Area including improvements to the bus set down area, the main terminal roundabout, drop off zone facilities and short term airport car park.

In a press statement London Luton Airport Operations Limited (LLAOL) says: “Once completed, the works, in conjunction with the opening of the East Luton Corridor, will deliver a significant improvement to the passenger journey for both arriving and departing passengers, as well as improving functionality for the wider airport community”.

“As the UK’s fifth largest airport, currently serving over 10 million passengers per year, London Luton continues to invest in infrastructure and service provision to provide passengers will the best possible travelling experience,” the statement continues.

The improvement works at Luton airport’s Central Terminal Area are expected to go on until Easter 2009. During this period the airport says it will do its best to minimise disruption to traffic but admits that some “localised congestion” will be experience during certain phases of the project.

The advice for passengers travelling to the airport is to allow additional time and to check for updates about how improvement works are affecting traffic at Luton airport’s website.

Luton airport is operated by a consortium between European infrastructure provider Abertis Infraestructuras, which has a 90% stake, and Spanish national airport and air traffic control organisation Aena, which holds the remaining 10% stake.

In the last decade passenger numbers at Luton airport have risen by 400% to over 10 million. The airport is a major base for low cost airlines include easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Monarch, Thomsonfly, SkyEurope, Aer Arann, Flybe, transavia.com and Thomas Cook Airlines.
