Manchester airport closes runway

Airport Arrivals and Departures

Manchester airport is closing its second runway from 5 to 29 February for engineering work, but hopes there will be no flight delays or cancellations as a result.

During the period when Runway 2 is closed all aircraft will take off and land on Runway 2. Manchester airport says the closure has been planned to coincide with its quietest period, but the closure will fall over the half-term holiday which could lead to queues at the airport.

"This is important but routine engineering work and we have chosen to do this during February which is traditionally a quieter time before the busy summer period," says Manchester airport managing director, Andrew Cornish.

"We hope to be able to manage all the aircraft on Runway 1 and don’t expect this work to cause any significant delays. We’re firmly committed to maintaining our high levels of service to both passengers and airlines and are mindful of the impact on the community,” adds Cornish.

Manchester airport recently announced that the Concorde supersonic aircraft that has been on display at the airport since 2003 will get a new £1 million super hangar and visitor centre.

The Concorde is the main attraction at the Aviation Viewing Park at Manchester airport which receives around 250,000 visitors a year. Work on the new hangar and visitor centre will start in the spring and is expected to be finished and open to the public by the end of July.

Manchester airport's Aviation Viewing Park is also a licensed wedding venue and many couples have got married onboard Concorde. "The hangar will not only protect Concorde for future generations to enjoy but it will also provide a great day out for the thousands of people we expect to visit in the future," says Manchester airport operations director, Andrew Holl.
