Modern airports 'prioritise self-service'

Modern airports are being organised around the growing preference for self-service check-in among passengers, according to BAA.

Self-service check-in through the use of touchscreen machines in airports is becoming increasingly popular and modern airports are beginning to arrange their layouts to encourage the trend, according to BAA.

A spokesperson for the airports operator explained that most hubs have generic self-service facilities that can be used by all travellers.

However he also pointed out that larger airlines have picked up on the trend and are offering their own machines for passengers to carry out their own check-in procedures.

"Most of the major airlines now have their own [machines] - Virgin have their own, British Airways have their own and United Airlines have their own," he said.

"The feedback we're getting back from them is that significantly more and more people are using them. British Airways are expecting about 80 per cent of people will be checking in online or using self-service kiosks."

Touchscreen check-in facilities are not the only initiative making the airport experience easier, the BAA spokesperson said, as many people are also using fast bag-drop points, which allow them to evade queues to check luggage on their flight.
