More travellers through Birmingham in October

Figures have been released by Birmingham airport showing a rise in passengers in October.

Birmingham airport has released figures showing that it handled 850,304 passengers in October, which is a 2.8 per cent increase on the same month last year.

Some 607,979 scheduled passengers flew from the West Midlands hub last month, while 242,055 travellers boarded charter services.

Routes to the Channel Isles saw the steepest growth in passenger activity in October (12.2 per cent), while long-haul routes to Asia also performed well (10.1 per cent).

Some 8.5 per cent more travellers used Birmingham's non-EU routes in October this year than in 2006, while EU services saw a passenger increase of 5.9 per cent.

The Slovakian capital Bratislava saw the steepest year-on-year passenger growth in the month (298.5 per cent), followed by Palma de Mallorca (135.7 per cent) and Aberdeen (110.8 per cent).

John Morris, Birmingham's head of corporate and community affairs, said: "I am delighted that Birmingham continues to grow, offering more choice and exciting new destinations.

"More people than ever are choosing to travel from the Midlands' premier gateway rather than face the hassle of less convenient airports."
