Nearly 0.5m use Gatwick for half term

The half-term weekend saw nearly half a million people travel through Gatwick airport, the hub has announced.

Nearly half a million people embarked on half-term holidays through Gatwick airport over the weekend.

Friday October 19th was the busiest day for holidaymakers eager to get away from the UK for a while, with around 115,000 taking flight from the London airport, figures show.

Half-term travellers using Gatwick showed an interest in a range of areas, from European hotspots and locations within the UK to long-haul destinations.

Malaga in Spain was the most popular of all, followed by Tenerife, Faro in Portugal, Palma de Mallorca and Turkish coastal town Dalaman.

Popular Spanish hotspot Alicante was the sixth most-used route over the weekend, while Edinburgh was the top UK destination.

Orlando International and Sanford airports in Florida were the only transatlantic destinations to make the list of popular spots from Gatwick this weekend, with Amsterdam rounding off the top ten.

Gatwick, which offers airport parking and hotels, is the second largest airport in the UK after Heathrow and the world's busiest single-runway air hub.
