New airline Air Sylhet to fly to Jeddah
[November 5th 2008]
Recently launched airline Air Sylhet has won the traffic rights to begin flights to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
Air Sylhet, which has headquarters in Birmingham and Vienna, recently announced that it will begin flights from Stansted and Manchester airports to Vienna and Dubai. The airline plans to fly twice a week from Stansted and once a week from Manchester airport to these destinations starting this month.
Air Sylhet now plans to operate three flights a week to Jeddah starting early next year. Passengers from the UK will be able to connect to Air Sylhets Vienna to Jeddah flights using the services from Manchester and Stansted.
Air Sylhet has been designated with traffic rights to Jeddah. We have now started the process towards launching our first flights to this very important and prestigious destination, says Air Sylhet vice chairman, Shab Uddin.
Uddin (pictured right) and the airlines general manager Kim ONeil (pictured left) met with the Saudi Arabian president of the General Authority for Civil Aviation, Engr. Abdullah MN Rehaimi (also pictured) to negotiate the traffic rights.
Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast, is the major urban centre of western Saudi Arabia. It is also close to Dammam, one of the largest airports in the world. Air Sylhet has also secured traffic rights from Vienna to Dammam and Rhiyadh, and will also be given access to Medina.
The new airline has been created by expatriate Bangladeshi businessmen and says it is taking advantage of a gap in an increasingly tough market by targeting destinations poorly served by other airlines.
Air Sylhet has now leased its first aircraft, an Airbus A320-200 capable of carrying 180 passengers. The airline says it plans to introduce other long haul routes soon and expects to serve Saudi Arabia from Birmingham airport in the near future. Chairman Kabir Khan says in the medium term the airline wants to expand its services to include long haul flights to Bangladesh.
Air Sylhet says it is not competing with no-frills airlines but is concentrating on providing safe, value-driven services which provide consistent, reliable products and fares.
