Record number of skiers from Glasgow

Skiers and wintersports enthusiasts are going against the trends of the recession and travelling in record numbers from Glasgow Airport, according to figures released by BAA.

With a host of new services to some of Europe's best ski resorts, in the period from November 2008 to February 2009, over 18,000 skiers had flown from Glasgow - an increase of 85% compared to 12 months earlier.

The increased demand has largely been influenced by the launch of flights from Glasgow to Turin, Grenoble and Chambery, in addition to the growing popularity of long-established flights to Geneva and Salzburg.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "This winter has been one of our busiest ever for ski holidays, with a near doubling of passenger numbers compared to last year. Despite the recession, the ski market remains particularly buoyant and we're delighted with the success of this year's programme. With several weeks left to the end of the winter schedule, we are on track to record our best performance for five years.

"This puts Glasgow in a great position for next winter and we are already talking to airlines about expanding their ski programme from Glasgow.

"Traditionally, winter holidaymakers heading for the slopes have had to connect through larger airports in the south. Now, with a growing range of ski destinations available from Glasgow, it's faster to fly from Scotland."
