Stansted airport boosts environmental credentials

Stansted airport has been recognised for its environmental management as it looks to increase passenger numbers.
Stansted is the largest UK airport to be awarded the ISO14001 certification for environmental management following an independent assessment and has been re-certified until October 2011.
"We were extremely proud to achieve ISO14001 status back in 2005 and maintaining the certification has only been possible by continually striving to improve all aspects of our performance," says BAA Stansted head of environment, Andy Jefferson.
"Our environmental management is critical to the sustainability of our business and is an issue we take extremely seriously. The assessment involved close inspection of various aspects of the operation,” continues Jefferson.
An example of Stansted’s commitment to the environment is the installation of a biomass heating boiler in the recent £50 million extension to the terminal building, which means the terminal is carbon neutral.
"We are fully committed to maintaining high standards of environmental management at Stansted, and recent successes include the introduction of biomass technology into the terminal extension and our work to improve the energy performance of FEGP (fixed electrical ground power) for parked aircraft,” says Jefferson.
“We're also extremely proud of our leading position as the No.1 UK airport for the percentage of passengers using public transport," he adds.
Stansted’s success in encouraging people to travel to the airport by public transport was recognised earlier this year when the airport won the prize for ‘Mobility Management in Companies’ at the International Transport Forum in Leipzig.
Around 44% of people travelling to Stansted use bus, coach or rail services for their journey to and from the airport, which is the highest figure for a major UK airport and one of the highest in the world.
There are more than 550 bus and coach departures every day from Stansted to over 60 destinations across the UK. The airport also has rail services every 15 minutes to London Liverpool Street station.
