London Zoo recently celebrated the birth of four baby Komodo Dragons. The proud mother, Sungai, is on loan from Thoiry Zoo in France.
The new arrivals are, presently, relatively small measuring about 50cm long from nose to tail. They will, of course, grow to accommodate the nature of their name and eventually be up to 3 metres long and about 100kg.
The biggest of all lizards, these giants live in the Islands of Komodo, Western Flores, Rinca and Padar. In the wild they eat wild pigs, water buffalo and deer! Believed to be the most intelligent of lizards as well, these amazing creatures are a majestic and fearful sight. The new arrivals at London Zoo, however, look a little more approachable at present.
Staff at London Zoo are delighted with the dragonlets which, like all Komodo Dragons in captivity, are now part of a European programme that raises funds to support the conservation of wild Komodo Dragons in Indonesia.
