Dubai airport keeps on growing
[16th April 2008]
Dubai International airport was the worlds fastest growing airport in 2007 and passenger numbers are up again this year.
Dubai International handled more than 34 million passengers in 2007, an increase of over 19%. But as Dubais popularity as a holiday destination and business centre continues to grow so does its airport. Passenger numbers for the first quarter of 2008 are up 15% on the same period in 2007.
Dubai is already in the top 10 busiest airports in the world and has grown at more than 15% a year for the last six years. On average 95,000 passengers use the airport every day.
Dubai Internationals growth is a reflection of Dubais robust economy, and its rising popularity as an international commercial and tourism hub. It is also a clear sign of our intent and vision for the future of the aviation sector in Dubai, comments chairman of Dubai Airports, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
Work on a new terminal at Dubai International airport is now nearing completion as part of a $4.5 billion expansion plan. Passenger numbers are expected to reach 60 million by 2010 and the airport will be able to accommodate the Airbus A380 superjumbo by 2009. But just 40km away what will become the worlds largest airport is now being built.
The new airport, the grandly named Dubai World Central Al Maktoum International, will be able to handle a staggering 120 million passengers a year. This will mean the combined capacity of the two airports at Dubai will be close to 200 million passengers.
Whether the frantic rate of construction in Dubai will continue with the credit crunch remains to be seen, but clearly more and more people are going to be taking a holiday in Dubai.
