Kenya restaurant opens on the water

A property developer in Kenya has opened a floating restaurant that invites customers to eat and drink on the water.

Visitors to the Lamu archipelago in Kenya now have the opportunity to visit a bizarre and original establishment - a floating restaurant.

The on-the-water eatery was opened by property developer Gerard Johnson, who has opened some of the most exotic resorts in the Lamu region, the Nation reports.

Mr Johnson decided to take the plunge on the venture owing to the high cost of land in Kenya's popular tourist areas and the danger of starting a construction in a conservation area.

And the developer does not appear to plan on leaving his establishment as it is, as he has plans to turn it into a fully-fledged hotel.

"This is what I would call the first phase of the project," Mr Johnson said.

He added: "The floating restaurant and bar we have named Chonjo is built on local palm fronds supported by coconut timber. It is built and decorated with local materials without any steel or concrete."

Visitors can find the restaurant, which serves seafood delicacies, among other dishes and drinks, floating off Manda beach.
