New air agreement reached with Singapore

A landmark air services agreement has been signed by the UK and Singapore.

All remaining restrictions on air services between the UK and Singapore have been removed following the completion of a new aviation agreement.

The terms of the accord were finalised last month and the agreement was signed by transport secretary Ruth Kelly and Singapore minister for transport Raymond Lim this week.

It is the second agreement of its type this week, with aviation minister Jim Fitzpatrick also signing an air services deal with the government of Brunei.

Ms Kelly said: "I am delighted to sign this landmark deal, which will be good for passengers and for the aviation industry, both in the UK and Singapore.

"As the most liberal agreement of its kind to date, I hope it will set the standard for other comparable agreements in the future."

The deal opens access to each country's aviation market for airlines from both nations, including services to any onward destinations.

It is the first agreement that gives entirely unrestricted access to the London-US market to a non-EU or US airline.
